Information We Collect
We collect the minimum needed to run the app well. Broadly, it falls into four buckets:
| Category | Examples | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Account info | Display name, handle, email address, avatar/initials, hashed password (or sign-in via a third-party provider) | You, at sign-up |
| Learning activity | Quiz & mock-exam scores, mastery percentages, streaks, badges earned, flashcard progress, reflections you write | Generated as you use the app |
| AI tutor content | Messages you send to the AI tutor and the replies it gives | You, when chatting with the tutor |
| Device & diagnostic data | App version, OS version, device model, crash logs, problem reports you submit | Automatically, or when you submit a report |
We do not knowingly collect government ID numbers, financial account details, or precise location data — General Science doesn't need any of that to work.
How We Use It
- To create and secure your account, and let you log in across devices.
- To save your progress — streaks, mastery, badges, reflections — so it's there next time you open the app.
- To power features you directly use: quizzes, mock exams, the AI tutor, and discussion forums.
- To show ads that keep the app free (see §04).
- To investigate bugs and problem reports you submit, and to improve reliability.
- To send optional notifications you've turned on (daily challenge and streak reminders) — never marketing spam.
The AI Tutor
The AI Tutor Chat feature is powered by a third-party AI model provider (OpenAI), accessed through our backend infrastructure. When you message the tutor:
- Your message text is sent to our backend and forwarded to the AI provider to generate a reply.
- Conversations are stored against your account so your tutor history persists between sessions.
- Please avoid sharing sensitive personal information (health details, ID numbers, home address, etc.) in tutor chats — treat it like messaging a study app, not a private diary.
AI-generated answers are a study aid, not a verified source. See the AI Tutor Disclaimer in our Terms of Service for the full picture.
Advertising
General Science is free to download and use. To keep it that way, the app displays advertising supplied by third-party ad networks (such as Google AdMob and its partners).
- These networks may collect an advertising identifier, coarse device information, and interaction data (impressions, clicks) to serve and measure ads.
- Ads may be personalized based on this data unless you limit ad tracking in your device's system settings (e.g. Settings → Privacy → Ads on Android) or through any in-app consent prompt shown to you.
- We do not hand your learning content, quiz scores, or AI tutor chats to advertisers — ad data is handled separately from your learning data.
You can reset or opt out of personalized advertising at any time from your device's OS-level ad settings. This affects ad relevance, not app functionality.
Learners Under 18
General Science is built for Grade 10 CBC learners, most of whom are teenagers. We take extra care with this audience:
- We do not knowingly collect more information from a learner than is needed to provide the app's core learning features.
- We do not use profile data to serve ads outside of standard contextual/limited-data advertising appropriate for an education app.
- If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information beyond what's described here, contact alevels254@gmail.com and we will review and, where appropriate, delete it.
- General Science is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13 without verifiable parental consent.
Storage & Security
Your data is stored on Supabase's managed infrastructure, encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest. Access to production data is restricted to what's needed to operate the service. No system is 100% immune to risk, but we apply industry-standard practices — access controls, hashed credentials, and regular dependency updates — to keep your data safe.
Data Retention
We keep your account and learning data for as long as your account is active, so your progress isn't lost between sessions. If you delete your account, we delete or anonymize your personal data within 30 days, except where we're legally required to retain it longer (for example, records needed to resolve a dispute or enforce our agreements).
Your Rights & Choices
Wherever you are, you can ask us to:
- Access a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Correct inaccurate or outdated information (or just edit it in-app, e.g. your profile).
- Delete your account and associated data.
- Export your learning history in a portable format.
- Withdraw consent for optional features like notifications, at any time, from Profile → Notifications.
To exercise any of these, email alevels254@gmail.com from the address on your account. We'll respond within 30 days.
Changes to This Policy
As General Science grows, this policy may be updated to reflect new features or legal requirements. We'll update the "Effective" date at the top of this page, and for material changes, we'll notify you in-app before they take effect.
